Rev Matt McCaffrey will begin a sabbatical leave period starting February 1, 2018 and extending through April 2018.
The congregation will be worshipping at 10 a.m. on Sundays with its host congregation, Crossroads Presbyterian Church, during the sabbatical period.
Rev Matt has been Transformational Pastor of Waterford Congregational United Church of Christ since 2011. He plans to “rest, and write” during the sabbatical time. He was called to the church when it was known as Second Congregational Church of New London, UCC, and located in the city at 45 Broad Street.
“We have been through many changes and made many decisions over this time” since the church donated that building to Miracle Temple in 2013, Rev Matt said. “It has been an amazing period of our lives, and I’m looking forward to some space and time for reflection.”
The members of Waterford UCC will be worshipping under the leadership of Rev. Anne Fuhrmeister, CPC Pastor. Deacon Liz Curcio of Waterford UCC has been planning the worship collaboration with Gay Buths, chair of CPC’s Worship Committee.
“We did this very successfully and smoothly last summer,” Liz said, speaking of joint services in 2017 while Rev. Anne was on sabbatical leave. “ We hope to have the ‘worship symbols’ of both congregations displayed on Sunday mornings, so everyone feels comfortable and included.”
The Waterford church has been “live-streaming” its worship services on YouTube since 2015. The live-stream will go on hiatus during the sabbatical period.
A special package of “re-runs” from previous services will be provided for the church’s cable community access program, which airs Tuesday evenings at 9 on Atlantic Broadband Channel 24. Waterford UCC has had a continuous presence on CATV since 1970, from the days of bulky videotapes.
